Through the first week of March, Colorado ski resorts experienced a slightly better ski season than a year earlier.
Utah resorts seem to be faring about the same.
The 22 resorts that belong to Colorado Ski Country USA reported that skier visits were up 3.4 percent over a year earlier, although there was a minimal decline in visitation during January and February.
Their performance was topped by an 8.7 percent increase in skier visits reported by Vail Resorts Inc., which does not belong to that association but has four large Colorado resorts -- Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge and Keystone -- as well as Heavenly in California (newly acquired Northstar-at-Tahoe is not included in this figure).
Vail's report also noted that lift ticket revenue for the five resorts rose 8.2 percent, while other measures of guest spending were even stronger. Sales at retail and rental outlets and dining expenditures both went up 14.4 percent, while ski school revenue rose 11.7 percent.
Ski Utah, the marketing arm for Utah's 14 active ski resorts, does not release comparable data.
But its president, Nathan Rafferty, said Tuesday he expects Utah resorts to experience 3 to 5 percent growth in skier numbers this season.
At that rate, he added, "we would land a solid second-place finish to 2007-08," when Utah set a record of 4.25 million skier days.
