Breckenridge Golf Club

The Town of Breckenridge can boast that it is the only municipality in the world to own a Jack Nicklaus designed 27-hole golf course. The golf course is situated in a beautiful mountain valley. The clubhouse sits at an elevation of 9324'. At this elevation the golf ball flies farther and straighter than at lower elevations. Important Info for Cyclists in Breckenridge!

Under some proposed changes to local traffic codes, cyclists in Breckenridge and Dillon won't have to worry about being ticketed for running stop signs -- as long as they exercise a high standard of due care when they approach intersections.

The changes would be modeled after a statewide standard recently adopted by Idaho, and would require riders of bicycles and electric-assisted bicycles to slow down to a reasonable speed when approaching stop signs, check for traffic and proceed through if safe. Cyclists would only be required to stop if another vehicle has the right of way.

Travel editors discuss consumers and changing travel patterns

Travelweekly.com

At the invitation of Travel Weekly, the chief editors of Afar, Budget Travel, Conde Nast Traveler, National Geographic Traveler and Travel + Leisure and the leisure travel editor of USA Today convened in New York earlier this year for the sixth annual Travel Weekly Consumer Travel Editors Roundtable.

The event was held at, and lunch provided by, A Voce restaurant in the Time Warner Center on Columbus Circle.

Travel Weekly Editor in Chief Arnie Weissmann moderated. This year, the focus was on consumers and changing travel patterns, and how the industry and these publications are changing as a result.

The original transcript has been edited for length, and the chronology has been altered to keep dialogue about specific topics together, even though the topic might have been discussed in recurring intervals during the course of the conversation.

Colorado’s numbers a harbinger for skiing uptick

The Salt Lake Tribune

By Mike Gorrell

The Salt Lake Tribune First published Mar 22 2011 06:57PM Updated Mar 22, 2011 10:26PM

Through the first week of March, Colorado ski resorts experienced a slightly better ski season than a year earlier.

Utah resorts seem to be faring about the same.

The 22 resorts that belong to Colorado Ski Country USA reported that skier visits were up 3.4 percent over a year earlier, although there was a minimal decline in visitation during January and February.

Their performance was topped by an 8.7 percent increase in skier visits reported by Vail Resorts Inc., which does not belong to that association but has four large Colorado resorts -- Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge and Keystone -- as well as Heavenly in California (newly acquired Northstar-at-Tahoe is not included in this figure).

Vail's report also noted that lift ticket revenue for the five resorts rose 8.2 percent, while other measures of guest spending were even stronger. Sales at retail and rental outlets and dining expenditures both went up 14.4 percent, while ski school revenue rose 11.7 percent.

Ski Utah, the marketing arm for Utah's 14 active ski resorts, does not release comparable data.

But its president, Nathan Rafferty, said Tuesday he expects Utah resorts to experience 3 to 5 percent growth in skier numbers this season.

At that rate, he added, "we would land a solid second-place finish to 2007-08," when Utah set a record of 4.25 million skier days.

Learning to Thrive

Life lessons from survivor extraordinaire Aron Ralston Few people personify the will to live better than mountaineer Aron Ralston. While hiking in Utah's Blue John Canyon in 2003, Ralston became trapped when a half?ton boulder unexpectedly fell and pinned his right arm. Alone and desperate, he managed to escape by amputating his arm with a dull pocketknife. He then hiked and rappelled for five hours before being rescued. Ralston documented his phenomenal story in the best?selling book Between a Rock and a Hard Place, which was recently adapted into the screenplay for the film 127 Hours. The film is currently nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor in a Leading Role for James Franco's portrayal of Ralston. As the headliner for the third General Session presentation on April 7th at this year's Mountain Travel Symposium (MTS) in Beaver Creek, Ralston will address a fitting theme: "Adaptation for Survival." With the Oscars this weekend and MTS just weeks away, Mountain Travel News caught up with Ralston to hear his thoughts about the film, finding one's motivation and why there's more to life than simply surviving.
